Kalu Uche's missed penalty proved crucial as Almeria missed the chance to pick up just their second Primera Division win of the season against 10-man Malaga, with the game ending 1-1.

Malaga, who entered the game with two wins from two on the road, had seen Pereira Eliseu sent off in the 40th minute for violent conduct after he reacted to a heavy challenge by Juanma Ortiz.

But the visitors made light of their numerical disadvantage to take the lead through Quincy Owusu-Abeyie four minutes after the interval.

Uche then had a chance to level matters but Ruben Martinez saved his penalty, although the striker did go on to grab his side's equaliser with 14 minutes remaining.

The hosts had started positively and came within inches of taking the lead when Pablo Piatti's close-range shot hit a post, although Malaga experienced similar frustration when Salomon Rondon's effort did likewise.

Uche also hit the woodwork with his low right-footed effort before the visitors saw Eliseu dismissed for his angry reaction to a robust tackle from Ortiz, which also saw the Almeria man booked.

The woodwork denied the home side when Corona's 20-yard curler came back of an upright, and Malaga rubbed salt into their wounds by claiming the opening goal.

Antonio Apono's pass found Owusu-Abeyie and the former Portsmouth man slotted the ball beyond Diego Alves into the bottom right-hand corner.

Ortiz blazed wildly over the crossbar as Almeria sought an equaliser and they looked set to do so when Patrick Mtiliga fouled Piatti, but Martinez guessed the right way to tip Uche's 63rd minute spot-kick round the post.

Martinez also kept out a fine effort from Piatti but Almeria's pressure eventually told as Uche tapped home from Hernan Bernardello's ball across the area.

The hosts pushed for a winner but Leonardo Ulloa and Ortiz failed to finish presentable chances in the dying moments.
